The Devil is in the detail: Mozart's Don Giovanni, and some of the history and fiction from which it is based
Abstract
This article contains extracts from an essay which explores how the myth of Don Giovanni might have been used by Mozart to convey satire and political criticism towards the Viennese culture at the time of Emperor Joseph II. The article also looks into Mozart's knowledge gained by meeting with the Freemasons from the early age of seventeen which also might have converged with this operatic masterpiece.
