The Construction of Psychiatric Diagnoses: The case of adult ADHD
Abstract
Psychiatric diagnoses have come to shape the way that people conceive of themselves and their lives. A new diagnosis, adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), has been strongly promoted by the pharmaceutical industry, but the authors question whether the disorder represents a discrete condition that can be distinguished from ordinary behaviour.
